Three cargo vessels were struck by projectiles near Iran’s coast on Wednesday, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations. One ship was hit about 11 nautical miles north of Oman in the Strait of Hormuz, triggering a fire and forcing the crew to abandon the vessel.
Two additional incidents were reported nearby. One ship was struck roughly 50 nautical miles northwest of Dubai. Another vessel was damaged off the coast of the United Arab Emirates. Authorities are investigating the attacks while urging ships to navigate the region carefully.

The incidents come as tensions rise following U.S. and Israeli airstrikes against Iran on Feb. 28. Shipping through the Strait of Hormuz has slowed sharply as Iran targets vessels attempting to pass through the critical route.
The waterway normally carries about 20 percent of global oil and gas supplies. U.S. Central Command confirmed Tuesday that American forces destroyed 16 Iranian mine laying vessels near the strait.
