The White House has declined an offer from Elon Musk to personally fund salaries for Transportation Security Administration workers during the ongoing Department of Homeland Security shutdown, CBS News reported.

According to sources cited by CBS News, the proposal was seriously განხidered by officials in the Trump administration. However, legal barriers complicated the idea, particularly due to Musk’s existing federal contracts.

The U.S. Office of Government Ethics bars private individuals from directly paying government employees.

Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt blamed Democrats for the funding deadlock, stating that Republicans have consistently pushed to restore DHS funding. The White House also indicated the shutdown may end soon.

President Donald Trump had earlier expressed support for Musk’s proposal.

TSA workers have already missed multiple paychecks. The agency’s acting head said employees have collectively lost about $1 billion in income across recent shutdowns, the report said.
