The Trump administration has proposed a new rule to cap the stay of foreign students and exchange visitors at four years, part of its broader push to tighten oversight of visa programs.
Currently, F visa holders may remain for the full duration of their program plus 60 days after completion. Under the new proposal, they would be admitted only for the length of their program, not exceeding four years. Foreign media visas would be limited to 240 days, with the option for extension.

A Department of Homeland Security spokesperson said past administrations allowed students to remain “virtually indefinitely,” creating security risks and burdening taxpayers.
The State Department has already revoked over 6,000 student visas this year, nearly four times last year’s pace, citing crimes ranging from DUI and burglary to “support for terrorism.” Officials have also ordered stricter vetting of student visa applicants for anti-American views.
