Trump Announces Historic Japan Trade Pact, Citing Job Growth

U.S. President Donald Trump

President Donald Trump on Tuesday unveiled a new trade framework with Japan, featuring a 15% tariff on imported Japanese goods and a headline-grabbing $550 billion investment pledge from Tokyo.

Calling it “a deal like no other,” Trump said Japan would invest the sum “at my direction” into U.S. industries while opening its markets to American-made cars and agricultural products, including rice. The president emphasized that the agreement would create “hundreds of thousands of jobs.”

The 15% tariff replaces a threatened 25% rate that was set to begin August 1. While markets initially wobbled when Trump signaled tougher terms in April, investor sentiment has since stabilized.

Key specifics — such as whether Japanese automakers will face additional sector-specific tariffs — remain unclear. The Japanese government has not yet released an official statement.

Trump touted the agreement as a win for American workers and evidence of his administration’s ability to strike pro-growth, America First trade deals.
