The Pentagon plans to livestream the execution of Nidal Hasan, who killed 13 people and attempted to murder 32 others in a 2009 shooting at Fort Hood, Texas. The execution is scheduled for December 3 at 1 p.m. local time, according to CNN.
Hasan was convicted in 2013 after opening fire on soldiers at the military base. He told the court that he had targeted troops preparing to deploy to Afghanistan.
The livestream proposal has drawn criticism from both Republicans and Democrats. Republican Sen. Thom Tillis called public executions unacceptable, while Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy described the plan as medieval. Catholic leaders also urged officials to reconsider.
Army regulations restrict who may witness military executions, potentially complicating the planned broadcast.
