President Donald Trump is set to meet U.S. oil refiners and fuel distributors Tuesday as his administration seeks immediate ways to expand refining capacity and reduce gasoline prices, according to a White House official.
The meeting will include Energy Secretary Chris Wright, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum and representatives from refiners and distributors of various sizes. The White House said Trump wants more energy production across the supply chain and greater savings for consumers at the pump.
Refinery disruptions tied to conflicts in Iran and Ukraine have reduced global capacity, contributing to higher fuel costs despite softer crude prices. Reuters reported that industry executives have warned increased oil supplies may not immediately translate into cheaper gasoline because of refining constraints.
Trump has also urged fuel retailers to cut prices as his administration promotes greater domestic energy production.
