The Trump administration has begun firing federal workers as the government shutdown enters its second week, Office of Management and Budget Director Russell Vought announced Friday on X.

He said the “reductions in force,” or RIFs, will be “substantial,” blaming Democrats for forcing the situation by refusing to approve funding.

The layoffs go beyond the usual furloughs that accompany shutdowns. While administrations are not required to fire workers during funding lapses, the White House is proceeding with mass layoffs to increase pressure on Democrats to negotiate. Details on which agencies and employees are affected remain unclear.

Federal employee unions have sued the administration, arguing the firings are illegal and seeking a court order to halt them.

U.S. District Judge Susan Illston has asked the Office of Management and Budget to disclose by Friday evening how many workers will be impacted.
