Trump said he appreciated Petro’s call and tone, adding that the two leaders plan to meet at the White House. He said the discussion focused on drugs and other ongoing disagreements.

Colombia’s embassy in Washington welcomed what it described as a constructive exchange, while a Colombian official familiar with the call told CBS News it marked a major shift in rhetoric.
Petro later said the conversation addressed broader differences over U.S. relations with Latin America and energy cooperation.

Relations have been strained as the Trump administration accused Colombia of failing to curb cocaine production and imposed sanctions on Petro and his family.
