President Donald Trump is visiting Kansas and Iowa as rising diesel prices strain farmers and Republicans work to protect vulnerable Senate seats ahead of the midterm elections.
Diesel averaged $6.30 per gallon nationwide on Friday, more than 70% above its level a year earlier, according to AAA. The surge is particularly burdensome during harvest season, when agricultural fuel consumption peaks.
Republicans are also investing heavily in competitive Senate contests. Nearly $15 million has been directed toward Nebraska’s race between Republican Sen. Pete Ricketts and independent challenger Dan Osborn. In Kansas, Republican Sen. Roger Marshall faces Democrat Adam Hamilton.
Former Montana Democratic Sen. Jon Tester predicted stronger-than-expected Democratic performances in agricultural states, comparing farmers’ current financial pressures to the farm crisis of the 1980s.
