President Donald Trump has ordered a surge of federal law enforcement personnel into Washington, DC, beginning Thursday night. The effort, led by the U.S. Park Police and supported by multiple agencies including the FBI, DEA, U.S. Marshals, and Capitol Police, will target tourist-heavy and high-crime areas. The week-long initiative may be extended.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the move is meant to protect residents, lawmakers, and visitors, citing recent high-profile crimes, including the murder of Israeli Embassy staffers.

Trump referenced the operation as part of his March executive order to make DC "Safe and Beautiful."
Though the DC Police report a 26% drop in violent crime this year, Trump has floated further measures, including taking over the DC Police Department and activating the National Guard. As of Friday, the Guard had not been deployed.
