President Donald Trump took to Truth Social on Monday to offer an unexpected show of support for former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, who is currently on trial over an alleged coup plot following his 2022 election loss.
In his post, Trump criticized Brazil’s judiciary, claiming Bolsonaro was being unfairly targeted. “Brazil is doing a terrible thing on their treatment of former President Jair Bolsonaro,” Trump wrote. “He is not guilty of anything, except having fought for the people.”
Trump, who has frequently denounced legal actions against his allies and himself as politically motivated, added: “I have watched, as has the world, as they have done nothing but come after him... leave Bolsonaro alone!”
Bolsonaro is facing charges for allegedly attempting to overturn election results and encouraging the storming of government buildings in January 2023. The trial has drawn global attention due to its parallels with the events of January 6, 2021, in Washington.
