Trump Floats Slashing China Tariffs To 80% Before Weekend Talks

President Donald Trump signaled a possible reduction in tariffs on Chinese goods, proposing an 80% rate in a Truth Social post Friday ahead of high-level talks in Switzerland. “80% Tariff on China seems right!” Trump wrote, hinting at a potential de-escalation of the ongoing trade war. Top U.S. officials, including Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, will meet their Chinese counterparts this weekend in Geneva for the first major bilateral talks in months.

Since Trump’s April 2 announcement of sweeping “Liberation Day” tariffs, trade tensions with China have surged. U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods currently stand at 145%, while Beijing has imposed 125% tariffs on American products. The Geneva meeting is seen as a key test of whether either side is ready to ease hostilities.
