President Donald Trump personally welcomed Chinese President Xi Jinping at Joint Base Andrews on Wednesday, opening a three-day state visit marked by an elaborate arrival ceremony.

Trump and First Lady Melania Trump greeted Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, on a 100-foot red carpet as a military band performed and B-1 bombers conducted a flyover.

The airport welcome was an unusual diplomatic gesture, as U.S. presidents typically greet state-visit leaders at the White House.

Xi’s visit is the first Chinese presidential state visit to Washington since 2015. The White House has planned a formal ceremony Thursday featuring hundreds of military personnel, a military review and a flyover involving a B-2 Spirit and four F-22 Raptors, followed by a state dinner.

Trump and Xi are expected to discuss trade, artificial intelligence, Taiwan, critical minerals and other areas of U.S.-China relations.

The visit comes as both governments seek to manage ongoing tensions and maintain a fragile trade truce, with analysts expecting limited substantive breakthroughs.
