President Donald Trump announced a 25% tariff on all imported medium and heavy-duty trucks, effective November 1, 2025, via a post on Truth Social.
The move comes after months of pushback from Detroit automakers, who warned the new duties could disrupt supply chains and raise costs.

The U.S. imported nearly 246,000 trucks in 2024, valued at $20.1 billion, primarily from Canada ($4.5 billion) and Mexico ($15.6 billion), according to the U.S. Department of Commerce.

The White House said the measure is aimed at protecting American manufacturing and jobs.
Trump had earlier hinted at implementing similar duties in October but delayed the start date following industry consultations.
