President Donald Trump said he would support the arrest of California Governor Gavin Newsom during remarks Sunday, escalating tensions as National Guard troops were deployed to tackle the immigration protests.

Newsom had earlier dared Homan to “just get it over with” during an NBC interview.
“I would do it if I were Tom,” Trump said, referring to border czar Tom Homan’s threat to arrest officials obstructing federal immigration enforcement. “Gavin will like the publicity, but I think it would be a great thing. He’s grossly incompetent. Everybody knows,” said Trump.
Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi condemned Trump’s comments, calling them “the hallmark of authoritarianism on the road to tyranny.”

California Attorney General Rob Bonta also pushed back, noting Trump invoked a rarely used federal law only seen once in modern history, by Richard Nixon during a postal strike, to justify deploying the Guard.
