President Donald Trump announced Thursday that he has instructed the Department of Commerce to begin preparing a new U.S. census that excludes undocumented immigrants from the population count.
In a Truth Social post, Trump said the revised census would reflect "modern day facts" and draw from 2024 election data. He declared, "People who are in our Country illegally WILL NOT BE COUNTED IN THE CENSUS."

The move would upend long-standing census practices. Historically, the U.S. Census counts all residents, regardless of legal status. The change could shift congressional representation and the allocation of federal funds, as these are based on total population.
Trump previously tried to add a citizenship question to the 2020 Census, but the Supreme Court blocked the effort.
The announcement comes as the Trump administration pushes GOP-led states to redraw congressional maps ahead of the 2026 midterms.
