President Donald Trump has nominated Texas Republican Rep. Wesley Hunt to serve as the next U.S. ambassador to Saudi Arabia, with the nomination formally sent to the Senate.

Hunt, a former Army officer, served two deployments in Saudi Arabia as a diplomatic liaison.

He is currently serving his second term in the House and has highlighted the strategic importance of the U.S.-Saudi partnership, particularly because of his ties to Houston's energy sector.

His nomination comes as Washington and Riyadh pursue a potential nuclear agreement that would require congressional review. Regional tensions are also rising, with Iran-aligned Houthis reportedly seizing Yemeni ports and threatening oil shipments near the Strait of Hormuz.

Hunt's confirmation must advance through the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. However, securing a vote before Election Day could prove difficult, with only two weeks remaining in the Senate session before the midterm elections.

If confirmed, Hunt would take on a key diplomatic role in a strategically important region.
