Trump Pulls Lance Schroyer Nomination To Lead ICE

The White House has withdrawn President Donald Trump’s nomination of Lance Schroyer to lead U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, ending an effort that had stalled in the Senate.

The withdrawal was listed by the White House on Sept. 17, although officials did not provide a reason for the decision.

Schroyer, a former Oklahoma state trooper and Marine, was nominated in June and had served as a senior adviser to Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin.

His nomination faced questions over his limited federal immigration-enforcement and large-agency leadership experience. Senate Homeland Security Committee Chairman Rand Paul had not scheduled a confirmation hearing, leaving the nomination in limbo.

ICE has not had a Senate-confirmed director since the Obama administration and has instead operated under acting leadership. David Venturella is currently serving as acting director following Todd Lyons’ resignation.

The withdrawal leaves the Trump administration needing to identify another nominee for the agency as ICE continues to play a central role in federal immigration enforcement.
