President Donald Trump has revealed that a large military facility is being constructed beneath the planned White House ballroom, a project already facing legal and political scrutiny.
Speaking to reporters, Trump said the underground complex is progressing ahead of schedule and forms a central part of the ballroom design.
The administration has described the 90,000-square-foot ballroom as a major upgrade, with enhanced security features such as bulletproof glass and a reinforced roof.

However, the report said the project has sparked backlash after the demolition of the East Wing and allegations that standard approval processes were bypassed.
A lawsuit by the National Trust for Historic Preservation is seeking to halt construction pending congressional review. Critics argue the project oversteps executive authority, while the White House maintains the president has the right to proceed.
A federal judge is reviewing the case, and a planning commission vote on the project is expected soon.
