President Donald Trump announced Monday that former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani will receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor.
Trump praised Giuliani as “the greatest mayor in the history of New York City” and “an American patriot.” Giuliani, who led New York during the 9/11 terror attacks, has remained a close Trump ally, serving on an advisory council at the Department of Homeland Security and advising the White House on the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The announcement follows Giuliani’s hospitalization after a car accident in New Hampshire over the weekend. He suffered a fractured vertebra and other injuries but remains “in great spirits,” his security chief said.

Once lauded as “America’s Mayor,” Giuliani has faced legal and financial troubles since 2020. Despite lawsuits, disbarment, and public controversy, Trump’s decision underscores his enduring loyalty to the former mayor.
