President Donald Trump told the United Nations General Assembly Tuesday that Iran faces a choice between reaching a deal with Washington or facing a major US military escalation.
Trump said he hoped Tehran would agree to an arrangement that would allow Iran to rebuild and develop its economy. But he also warned that if negotiations fail, he could move to destroy the Islamic Republic and prevent it from threatening other countries.
Trump’s comments come as the prolonged Iran war contributes to higher fuel prices and creates political pressure ahead of the elections, where Republicans are defending control of Congress.
The president also indicated he would probably meet Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on the sidelines of the UN summit. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is also attending the gathering.
