President Donald Trump said Wednesday that the United States does not believe the suspected plague case involving a Russian laboratory worker was caused by a biological weapon.

Darya Shipilova, a 28-year-old laboratory technician at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute in Siberia, died last week following a brief illness. Nearly 200 people were reportedly placed under medical observation as authorities investigated the incident.

Trump said he is scheduled to speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin about the matter, while the U.S. and United Nations have called for greater transparency from Russian authorities.

Washington is seeking additional information about the incident. Russia has denied that plague was detected among those tested, and officials have described the illness differently. Trump said he was engaged in “deep discussions” about the case and indicated that more information could emerge within a day.
