Trump Says US Diesel Export Ban Is Under Serious Consideration

President Donald Trump said his administration is seriously considering restricting or banning US diesel exports as global fuel supplies tighten and American prices rise.

“We’re thinking about it very seriously,” Trump told Fox News on Sunday, adding that an export ban remained possible. Politico previously reported that the administration was preparing a potential 90-day ban, although Energy Secretary Chris Wright has described restrictions as an alternative.

Energy companies and market analysts warn an export ban could have unintended consequences. Morgan Stanley said the move could initially reduce US diesel prices but potentially push global prices higher and create pressure on US gasoline prices.

Argus Media said Europe could be particularly vulnerable because the US has supplied roughly half of its diesel imports recently. The American Petroleum Institute urged Washington to increase supply rather than impose restrictions, according to the report.
