Trump Says White House Ballroom Could Cost Up To $400 Million

U.S. President Donald Trump

President Donald Trump said the cost of a new ballroom at the White House could reach $400 million, doubling the original $200 million estimate announced earlier this year. Trump made the remarks during a Hanukkah reception, arguing the White House lacks adequate space for major events and inaugurations.

Trump said the ballroom would be privately funded by himself and donors, stressing that no taxpayer money would be used.

He described the structure as highly secure and capable of hosting large gatherings, including future inaugurations.

A federal judge on Tuesday cleared the way for construction to continue, rejecting a legal challenge from a preservation group that sought to block the project without congressional approval.

The White House first projected the ballroom would cost $200 million, later revising the estimate to $300 million as construction began.

Critics argue the project allows wealthy donors to gain influence and point to controversy over the demolition of the East Wing, despite earlier assurances the historic building would not be affected.
