President Donald Trump criticized birthright citizenship as “stupid” after attending Supreme Court arguments on his executive order seeking to restrict the policy.
The case challenges long-standing interpretation of the 14th Amendment, which grants citizenship to those born on U.S. soil.

CNBC said Trump’s administration argued that automatic citizenship encourages illegal immigration and “birth tourism.” Solicitor General D. John Sauer told the court the current system undermines the value of citizenship.
However, justices raised concerns about the legal reasoning. Chief Justice John Roberts questioned whether the administration’s interpretation stretches constitutional language too far.
Lawyers opposing the order, including the American Civil Liberties Union, argued that birthright citizenship is firmly established law.
Lower courts have already blocked the policy from taking effect. According to reports, tens of thousands of births each month could be impacted if the order is upheld. A final ruling is expected later this year.
