The move would be unprecedented in the forum’s two-decade history and follows a year of collapsing U.S.–South Africa relations.

Instead, the administration intends to elevate Poland’s role at the 2026 G20 gatherings. South Africa said it has heard the speculation but has not received formal notice. The rupture comes after the U.S. expelled South Africa’s ambassador and suspended aid earlier this year, deepening tensions as Pretoria ended its G20 chairmanship without a U.S. handoff.
