President Donald Trump told FIFA officials that Iran will be allowed to participate in the 2026 FIFA World Cup hosted in the United States despite the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, officials told CBS News.

The issue was discussed Tuesday during a meeting in the Oval Office with FIFA President Gianni Infantino and Andrew Giuliani, executive director of the White House FIFA task force. The war involving Iran was part of the conversation as planning for the tournament continues.

Infantino later said the World Cup can help unite people during difficult global moments. He wrote on social media that major international events can bring nations together.

Iran was the first country to qualify for the 2026 World Cup but did not attend a recent planning meeting in Atlanta, according to Politico. Iran is scheduled to play matches in Los Angeles and Seattle against New Zealand, Belgium, and Egypt during the tournament.
