President Donald Trump on Thursday signaled a further escalation in the conflict with Iran, warning that the United States would launch additional military strikes and again raising the possibility of taking control of Kharg Island, a key hub for Iranian oil exports.
In a Truth Social post, Trump said the US would strike Iran "very hard" and claimed much of Tehran’s military capability had already been degraded. Speaking later on Fox News, he said taking Kharg Island had long been his preferred option, though he questioned whether Americans would support such a move.
The latest tensions follow the downing of a US Apache helicopter near the Strait of Hormuz earlier this week. According to US Central Command, American forces responded with strikes on Iranian surveillance, communications and air defense systems.
The military also reported disabling an oil tanker accused of violating the US naval blockade. Centcom said it was the third vessel stopped this week and the 13th since the blockade began in April.
