The United States and Britain are set to hold talks in Washington over potential use of the Diego Garcia military base as tensions rise with Iran, according to CBS News.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio is scheduled to meet UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper amid disagreement over Britain’s plan to transfer sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius while leasing Diego Garcia long term.
President Trump is absolutely right to tell Starmer to abandon the terrible #chagos deal with Mauritius. @POTUS understands how strategically important the airbase at Diego Garcia is. President Donald Trump criticized the deal and warned the base could be needed if diplomacy with Iran fails. British media reported the UK has denied US requests to use Diego Garcia and RAF Fairford for strikes on Iran.
Iran has formally protested Trump’s remarks at the United Nations, calling them unlawful threats. The dispute comes as the US increases its military presence near Iran to pressure Tehran over its nuclear program.
