The Trump administration is weighing a major expansion of its travel ban following last week’s shooting of two National Guard soldiers in Washington, D.C. Multiple U.S. officials told CBS News that the White House is considering adding roughly 10 more countries to the current list of 19, though the final number remains in flux.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem urged President Trump to impose a “full travel ban” after authorities said the attack was carried out by an Afghan man who arrived in 2021 and was granted asylum earlier this year.
In response, the administration has frozen all visa processing for Afghans, paused asylum decisions for all nationalities and begun reviewing green card cases from the 19 countries already covered.
Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem recommended that President Donald Trump should enact “a full travel ban on every damn country that’s been flooding our nation with killers, leeches, and entitlement junkies.”

The expanded list would build on Trump’s summer proclamation, which imposed broad restrictions on travel and immigration from nations in Asia, Africa and the Caribbean. DHS said the updated list will be announced “soon.”
