US forces in the Middle East could launch major military operations against Iran within 96 hours of an order from President Donald Trump, according to two US officials cited by CNN.
Military planners have developed potential targets that include Iranian energy infrastructure, military installations and nuclear facilities. Officials said Trump has not made a final decision, although some believe action could follow November’s midterm elections.
The United States is reportedly preparing to reduce embassy staffing across parts of the Middle East and has halted some planned military personnel deployments.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has also pushed for renewed attacks, but Washington has urged Israel to wait for possible joint operations. Israeli officials disputed reports of disagreements over timing and military planning.
Meanwhile, US forces continue enforcing a blockade on Iranian ports and supporting shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, where security concerns are keeping oil prices elevated.
