Trump, Xi Hold Call As Taiwan Tensions Rise And Trade Talks Stall

President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping

President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping held a phone call Monday to discuss trade, Taiwan and the ongoing war in Ukraine, according to statements from both governments.

China’s Xinhua news agency said Xi stressed that bringing Taiwan under Beijing’s control is “an important part of the postwar international order,” and urged Washington to help “safeguard the victorious outcome of World War II.”

The White House confirmed the call but did not release details. The conversation came days after Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi suggested Japan’s military could intervene if China moves against Taiwan, escalating tensions in the region.

Trade was also on the agenda, though Beijing offered no sign of progress on issues such as expanded purchases of U.S. goods.

The call underscores how Taiwan and global security concerns continue to overshadow economic negotiations between the world’s two largest powers.
