Two children, ages eight and ten, were killed Wednesday in a mass shooting at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis, Police Chief Brian O’Hara confirmed.

He called it a “deliberate act of violence” and condemned the “sheer cruelty” of firing into a church full of children.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey told reporters, “Children are dead. There are families that have a deceased child. You cannot put into words the gravity, the tragedy or the absolute pain of this situation.” He urged the community to rally around grieving families.

Authorities confirmed the suspected shooter is dead and the situation has been contained. Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz said the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and State Patrol are assisting. FBI agents also responded, while Hennepin Healthcare reported an ongoing emergency.

The shooting occurred during the first week of classes at the K-8 Catholic school, further shocking the community.
