Two Dead After Medical Helicopter Crashes Near Catalina Island

Two people were killed and another remained missing after a REACH Air Medical Services helicopter carrying five people crashed near Catalina Island on Wednesday evening.

The aircraft went down near Pebbly Beach shortly after takeoff, prompting a search-and-rescue operation.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department deployed helicopters and dive teams after receiving the report at about 7:50 p.m.

Four people were rescued from the crash area. Two were taken to a hospital in Avalon in stable condition with minor injuries, while the medical condition of the other two was not immediately known.

Global Medical Response is coordinating with authorities as the U.S. Coast Guard and dive teams continue searching for the missing person. Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn confirmed the crash and said rescue operations were underway.

Authorities have not yet released details about the identities of those aboard or the cause of the crash, which remains under investigation.
