The United States stepped up military coordination with Japan this week as Chinese naval and air drills continued near Japanese territory, intensifying a fast-rising security standoff in the region.

Japan’s Defense Ministry said six SDF fighter jets, including F-35s and F-15s, trained with two U.S. B-52 bombers on Wednesday to reinforce joint deterrence against any attempt to alter the regional status quo by force.

On Thursday, the nuclear-powered USS George Washington arrived in Yokosuka after completing joint missions with allied forces.

The show of force followed a China-Russia joint air patrol that passed near Japanese and South Korean airspace, adding to Tokyo’s concern.

Tensions spiked further after Japan accused Chinese fighter jets of locking radars on its F-15s, a signal of potential attack. Beijing denied wrongdoing, accusing Tokyo of harassment.

Relations have deteriorated since Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi warned Japan could respond militarily to a Chinese assault on Taiwan.
