U.S. authorities deported Daniela Fuentes, a 32-year-old Cuban transgender woman, to the Central African Republic on August 29, where she is now staying at a government compound in Bangui.

The deportation is part of a broader U.S. policy allowing migrants to be sent to countries other than their own. About 25,000 people have reportedly been deported to third countries since such agreements began, including more than 500 people sent to African countries between January 2025 and August 2026.

Advocacy groups have raised concerns about the treatment of LGBTQ people in some countries receiving deportees. Human Rights Watch has also criticized the human rights conditions facing some deported migrants.

Fuentes reportedly lacks identification and cannot legally work, leaving her largely confined to the compound while awaiting travel documents. The U.S. has committed $85 million to the International Organization for Migration for migrant assistance.

Cuba has authorized her return, but Fuentes hopes to seek asylum elsewhere, potentially in Canada.
