President Donald Trump announced Thursday he will extend existing tariffs on Mexican imports for 90 days as trade talks continue with President Claudia Sheinbaum.
Trump had recently warned of raising tariffs to 30% but opted to maintain the current rates following what he described as a “very successful” phone call with Sheinbaum.
In a Truth Social post, Trump wrote that both leaders are “getting to know and understand each other” and noted the unique challenges and opportunities tied to the U.S.-Mexico border.

Under the extension, Mexico will continue facing a 25% tariff on fentanyl-linked goods, 25% on automobiles, and 50% on steel, aluminum, and copper.
The tariff pause signals cautious optimism for a potential trade agreement, while maintaining economic pressure on Mexico to address border-related concerns.
