The United States announced plans Thursday to send a third aircraft carrier and additional Marines to the Middle East, potentially bringing the number of U.S. sailors and Marines in the region above 20,000 by late October.
The Japan-based USS George Washington is already operating in the region, while the USS Theodore Roosevelt is expected to join it. The deployment would create the largest concentration of three U.S. aircraft carriers in the region since the Iraq War in 2003.
More than 7,000 sailors and additional Marines are included in the buildup, alongside two Marine Expeditionary Units assigned since March.
Trump has also said increased U.S. military action remains possible after the November midterm elections. Hundreds of U.S. aircraft are already positioned across the region.
