U.S.–Russia Talks Could Undercut Ukraine, Finnish President Warns

European leaders are alarmed after Finnish President Alexander Stubb warned that U.S. negotiators were likely speaking with Russia at the same time they held talks with Ukrainian officials in Miami on Nov. 30.

According to a transcript reviewed by the Kyiv Independent, Stubb told leaders including France’s Emmanuel Macron, Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelensky, and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte that Jared Kushner hinted the Moscow talks were “95% agreed,” with the unresolved issue being Russia’s demand that Ukraine surrender territory — a red line for Kyiv.

Zelensky warned allies he fears U.S. pressure if Europeans are absent from future sessions and insisted Ukraine cannot negotiate land concessions without him.

European leaders expressed concern that Washington may pursue a deal with Moscow that neither Ukraine nor the EU can accept. They also demanded enforceable security guarantees and control over frozen Russian assets.

Germany’s Friedrich Merz cautioned Zelensky: “Be very careful… They are playing games with both you and us.”
