Two senior U.S. Army officials made an unannounced wartime visit to Kyiv in a rare direct engagement by President Donald Trump’s administration, Politico reported.

Army Secretary Dan Driscoll and Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George are meeting President Volodymyr Zelensky, Ukrainian commanders, and lawmakers as Washington attempts to revive stalled peace talks with Russia.

The Wall Street Journal reports Driscoll is also expected to meet Russian officials, part of a quietly developing Trump administration plan to end the war through military intermediaries after earlier diplomatic efforts faltered.

The visit comes as Russia intensifies missile and drone attacks on Ukrainian cities and energy infrastructure, while making slow gains on the battlefield.

Poland said it scrambled aircraft Wednesday after Russian strikes hit western Ukraine near its border.

Trump has repeatedly vowed to quickly end the war, raising concerns among European allies about any settlement that could cement Russia’s territorial control.
