A U.S. Navy submarine carried out a torpedo strike that sank an Iranian warship in the Indian Ocean, off the southern coast of Sri Lanka.

The vessel, identified as the IRIS Dena, was struck in waters south of the island nation. Sri Lankan authorities said 32 sailors had been rescued, while around 140 crew members are feared missing.

According to U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, the attack marked the first time an enemy vessel had been sunk by a torpedo since the Second World War. He described the strike as a significant moment in modern naval warfare.

IRIS Dena was the newest frigate in Iran’s naval fleet, having been launched in 2015. The warship was equipped with surface-to-air missiles, anti-ship missiles, a naval cannon, machine guns, and torpedo launchers, making it one of the most advanced vessels in the Iranian navy.

On Tuesday, U.S. military Central Command said it had already sunk 17 Iranian warships and was on track to destroy Iran’s entire navy, signaling a dramatic escalation in hostilities in the region.
