A U.S. submarine sank an Iranian warship off the southern coast of Sri Lanka, according to U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, as tensions in the expanding conflict with Iran continue to escalate. The vessel, identified by Sri Lankan officials as the IRIS Dena, reportedly had about 180 personnel on board when the incident occurred, Reuters reported.

Sri Lanka quickly launched search and rescue operations after receiving a distress signal from the Iranian ship. The Sri Lankan navy and air force responded near the waters south of Galle.

Authorities recovered several bodies from the sea, while 32 survivors were rescued and transported to a hospital in Galle for treatment, Sri Lankan navy spokesman Commander Buddhika Sampath said.

Rescue teams arriving at the scene found only an oil slick and no visible remains of the vessel. Officials said the sinking occurred outside Sri Lankan territorial waters, but Colombo continues to assist with rescue efforts.

Sri Lankan authorities said investigations into the incident will follow once rescue operations conclude.
