The U.S. tourists were stranded across parts of western Mexico after cartel violence erupted following the killing of drug kingpin Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as El Mencho, authorities and travelers said.
Gunmen linked to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel torched vehicles, blocked roads, and clashed with security forces in areas including Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara.
The U.S. State Department urged Americans to shelter in place, while several U.S. airlines suspended flights, leaving tourists unable to leave.

Travelers described scenes of burning cars, heavy smoke, and sudden lockdowns. Families sheltered in hotels and rentals as streets emptied and airports shut down. Some tourists reported being separated from relatives due to travel restrictions.
The violence followed a major Mexican military operation that killed Oseguera and triggered widespread retaliation. U.S. officials advised travelers to monitor local alerts and follow instructions from authorities as conditions remained unstable.
