The base had served as a key hub for counter ISIS operations under Operation Inherent Resolve.
Recent U.S. airstrikes and raids continue to target ISIS logistics and communications networks, signaling that counterterror missions will persist despite the smaller footprint.

Syrian government forces under President Ahmed Al Sharaa have taken control of the site in coordination with Washington.
The Trump administration has backed Al Sharaa’s leadership and eased some sanctions after his government helped remove Bashar al Assad and pledged cooperation against ISIS.
Officials say the repositioning reduces risk to U.S. personnel while preserving regional deterrence. The shift highlights a broader strategy of relying on local partners to contain terrorist threats.
