UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer suffered a major political setback after Labour finished third in a by-election it had controlled for decades. The Green Party won the Gorton and Denton seat in Greater Manchester, marking its first-ever by-election victory.
Green candidate Hannah Spencer captured 40.7 percent of the vote. Reform UK placed second, while Labour fell to 25.4 percent. The result sharply contrasts with Labour’s strong showing in the 2024 general election.
Starmer called the outcome disappointing and acknowledged voter frustration. Analysts say the result highlights growing challenges to Britain’s two main parties from both the left and right ahead of local elections in May.
Markets reacted modestly, with UK government bond yields edging lower. The vote adds pressure to Starmer amid broader concerns about party leadership and voter confidence.
