British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is facing renewed turmoil within the Labour Party amid reports that colleagues are plotting to replace him just weeks before a major budget announcement.
British media reported that Starmer’s allies suspect Health Secretary Wes Streeting of preparing a leadership challenge, a claim Streeting dismissed as “self-defeating nonsense.”

He accused those spreading the rumors of trying to “kneecap” him. The controversy quickly escalated, forcing Starmer to tell Parliament he had not authorized any negative briefings and that “any attack on my cabinet is unacceptable.”
The internal unrest comes as Labour’s poll numbers plummet, with only 17% of Britons approving of Starmer’s performance, according to YouGov. The party is expected to unveil tax hikes and spending cuts in its upcoming budget, potentially deepening voter frustration.
Despite Streeting’s denial, speculation of a leadership challenge continues to swirl, though ousting Starmer would require the backing of 80 Labour MPs.
