Ukraine has run out of interceptor missiles for its US-made Patriot air defence systems, leaving the country more exposed to Russian ballistic missile attacks, a source told CNN.

The shortage reportedly prevented Ukrainian forces from intercepting most ballistic missiles during a recent Russian assault. The attack damaged three power plants in Kyiv and targeted energy infrastructure in Kharkiv. Four people were killed and 25 injured in Kyiv.

President Volodymyr Zelensky has repeatedly sought additional Patriot missiles, which remain expensive and scarce globally. He previously said Ukraine urgently needed far more interceptors than it possessed.

The shortage comes amid worsening tensions with US President Donald Trump, whose administration has pressed Kyiv to stop attacking Russian energy facilities. Zelensky has said additional air defence supplies would be a minimum requirement for halting those strikes.

US officials have also reportedly warned that weapons purchases and intelligence sharing could be restricted if Ukraine refuses to comply. Trump maintains that intelligence sharing continues.
