Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has urged the European Union to bypass Hungary’s veto on a €90 billion loan package, calling the blockade unfair and politically motivated, reported by officials during his visit to Spain.

Zelensky said the funding is critical for Ukraine and should proceed despite objections from Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who has reportedly linked his opposition to energy disputes involving Russian oil supplies, according to the report. The EU had previously agreed to the loan before the end of 2025.

Speaking alongside Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez in Madrid, Zelensky pressed EU leaders to resolve the impasse at an upcoming summit in Brussels. Sanchez reaffirmed Spain’s support and announced €1 billion in bilateral aid for 2026, the report said.

The standoff highlights divisions within the EU as Ukraine seeks sustained financial backing while Europe navigates competing geopolitical pressures, including the ongoing Middle East conflict.
