Ukraine announced on Oct. 23 that it has received 1,000 bodies from Russia, which Moscow claims are fallen Ukrainian soldiers. Investigators and Interior Ministry experts will now conduct forensic examinations to confirm the identities, according to Ukraine’s Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War.

The repatriation, supported by the Red Cross, is part of a series of recent exchanges between the two countries — one of the few outcomes of the Istanbul peace talks held between May and July. Russia, in turn, received 31 bodies from Ukraine.
