Ukraine Repatriates 1,000 Bodies From Russia Amid Ongoing Exchanges

Ukraine announced on Oct. 23 that it has received 1,000 bodies from Russia, which Moscow claims are fallen Ukrainian soldiers. Investigators and Interior Ministry experts will now conduct forensic examinations to confirm the identities, according to Ukraine’s Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War.

The repatriation, supported by the Red Cross, is part of a series of recent exchanges between the two countries — one of the few outcomes of the Istanbul peace talks held between May and July. Russia, in turn, received 31 bodies from Ukraine.

Kyiv has accused Moscow of previously attempting to disguise its own casualties as Ukrainian troops to conceal the scale of Russian losses.

The largest body exchange occurred on June 2, when Ukraine repatriated 6,057 soldiers following the second round of Istanbul negotiations, while Russia reclaimed only 78, Kremlin aide Vladimir Medinsky said.
