At least 812 people have been killed and nearly 3,000 injured after a magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan late Sunday night. The tremor hit Kunar and Nangarhar provinces, flattening villages and triggering landslides in the mountainous region, according to officials.

Rescue teams are searching for survivors as helicopters ferry the wounded to hospitals. Afghanistan’s Ministry of Defense said it deployed doctors and medical supplies, with at least 40 flights carrying the injured and dead. Survivors described harrowing scenes, with families trapped under collapsed roofs.

The disaster further strains a country already reeling from poverty, reduced foreign aid, and the return of Afghan migrants from neighboring states. Experts warn that shallow earthquakes like this one are especially destructive and that aftershocks could worsen the crisis.

International offers of support have come from the United Nations, Iran, and China, pledging humanitarian assistance to the devastated region.
